The Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) responsibility stretches over the wide-ranging fields of agriculture forestry and a the food industry to environmental questions, veterinary medicine and biotechnology. 3550 undergraduates and 900 postgraduate students are enrolled at SLU. The SLU Department of Crop Production Ecology (former Department of Short Rotation Forestry) is unique in Sweden in the sense that a coherent scientific programme on SRP has been carried out uninterruptedly during a long period. The overall aim of the research is “to develop the basic biological, ecological, and production technological knowledge necessary to achieve a high and sustained production of woody stem biomass for energy purposes under ecologically acceptable forms”.
